My Alaska Life

Southcentral Alaska has lots of Devil’s Club, a shrub that grows up to 10 feet tall and has spines (thorns) all over the stems, and leaves. In the Springtime you can collect and eat the buds before they sprout but this time of year the leaves get huge and they cover the floor of the forests. They get so thick that it’s hard to get around them and the only way to get through them is with a machete.
