My Alaska Life
John dug a ditch in the garden for compost. As we harvest we are throwing all the leftovers in it. After finishing the white potatoes Jeff threw all the scraps in the ditch and raked out he rows.

It’s time to finish harvesting the garden. It’s getting cold! Dug up the Yukon Gold which are probably the overall best potatoes for Alaska. Got some nice potatoes. Made some baked potatoes for dinner out of these 3 beauties.

I was just saying how fast fall is coming…now just like that I see winter coming. Yesterday we got socked in with rain and the clouds covered our mountain. As the first photo shows, yesterday the mountaintop had no snow on it. Then as the clouds disappeared today there was snow on the top of the mountain. It won’t be long before the snow comes down to us. Probably 4 weeks from now.

It seems like only a week or so ago everything was still green but the weather turned cold and it feels like Fall is here overnight. The green is turning to yellows and reds.

People love to go to the Alaska State Fair to see the big vegetables. Even though summers are short our crops grow big because we have so much sunlight all summer long. I entered one of our potatoes and won a blue ribbon. It was over a pound which isn’t near the record of 4 pounds but it still won this year. We will actually probably still dig up some bigger potatoes. We haven’t finished harvesting yet.

I got real busy with the Alaska State Fair in Palmer. It lasted 3 weeks and I went quite a few times just to have fun, and volunteered to help out in the barn a few days. I also entered things in the fair and won a few ribbons!

I’ve been so busy lately. Haven’t gotten around to posting pics. Here’s a few more from my day driving up a little 2 lane road to Hatcher’s Pass in the mountains, elevation almost 4,000 feet, so high you’re above the clouds.

Took a drive into the mountains to see Independence Mine in the Matanuska Valley. This gold mine was active in the 1930’s and 40’s and is now a historic landmark.

We planted quite a few turnip seeds this year and got a bumper crop. This is only half of them. There’s still a bunch left in the garden.
