My Alaska Life
The guys had no luck getting a moose during bowhunting season but they’re back at it looking for moose again now that it’s rifle season. Here they are heading into the woods. Good luck guys!

The fireweed is seeded out now. That’s a definite sign of the end of summer. The other sure sign that winter is drawing near is snow on the higher elevations. It won’t be long before it’s down on the ground again.

We had the driest June on record. It was hard to keep the garden watered but I loved it. Since July we’ve had so much rain! I know I posted about it before. August ended up being the 3rd wettest on record. I got a little tired of the rain. Most days of the 2 week state fair were raining. We did a little running from it but the sun did come out some and we enjoyed ourselves either way.

The Alaska State Fair has been going on the last few weeks keeping me very busy. I’ve been there quite a few times. Here’s me with the record breaking pumpkin at this year’s fair. 2,147 pounds! Wow!

It’s a busy time of year! We picked some of the cabbages and Jeff made his famous sauerkraut. Here he is grating it and setting it aside to ferment.

Bowhunting season opened up for moose in our area and Jeff and John both like to bowhunt. It’s been pretty rainy but they’ve gone out a number of times to look. Only moose they saw were a couple of bulls that didn’t meet the requirement to shoot. In order to shoot them moose have to have antlers with a spike or a fork (pretty small and young but not babies) or 3 brow tines or 50 inch span on the antlers (pretty big). The bulls they saw were in between that so they couldn’t shoot them. Here they are disappearing into the wood for the evening.

With all the rain we’ve been having the roof started leaking where the wood stove chimney attaches to the roof. It’s a 2-story high roof and a little dangerous to climb up there but Jeff waiting till a lull in the weather and climbed up on the ladder and put some caulking around the pipe. Crossing our fingers it won’t leak anymore. We have lots more rain in the forecast to find out.
