The river is still pretty low but Jeff managed to get his boat in the water in spite of the 6 foot drop!

It helps to be mechanical living out in the wilds of Alaska. You don’t have anyone else to fix your machinery. Jeff takes pretty good care of his. After he got the 6 wheeler out from the shed he stores it in, he tuned up the snowmachines then put them in that spot for the summer along with sleds that we won’t need again until winter. Then he moved on to tuning up the 6 wheeler which needed a little work after sitting all winter. Seems like he always has some machinery to work on out here. Working equipment does make life easier though.

Here it is May and we still have snow in the raspberry patch and the garden. In Alaska people usually plan on planting after Memorial Day and this is why. It’s still cold in the mornings. In the 30’s. Too cold for planting yet.

Fun to see some ducks hanging out on the river in front of the cabin. Jeff says they are teals.

When the river broke up it left lots of icebergs on the bank. We took the opportunity to climb around on a few icebergs on our beach. Like usual, Jeff won our game of King of the Mountain!

The main channel of the river finally broke through yesterday about 4pm. Lots of ice passed by and cleared ice from upriver and will continue to clear out ice for miles above us in the next week or two. For now the east and west channels of the river are clogged with ice along with both banks but that will also clear in the next week or two so people can get their boats in the water.

Yesterday the river started breaking up in front of us. First picture we had water in front of us when we went to bed. The second picture shows the next morning. Overnight the water broke up more and we woke up to ice in front of us again. Third picture shows the river from upriver of us. Still lots more ice to break up and come down past us.

Saw this young moose try to cross the river downstream from us but he got out there and decided the ice was too thin and turned around and went back to where he came from. He probably would have gotten stuck in soft snow and been unable to get out. It happens to moose every year.

One thing about Spring coming that I don’t like is mosquitos start to appear right away..and they are big already this year. Jeff got the mosquito screen up over the porch so we can at least sit outside on the porch without worrying about being swarmed by those horrible little insects.

I didn’t have room in the last post to show you the boat after Jeff put the motor on and drug it over near the river. Here it is sitting close to the ramp so when the time comes he can put it in the water. As you can see the river is still frozen but he’s ready to go!
