Got the big boat out in the river again. Time to enjoy boating season along with more gorgeous sunsets and Alaskan wildlife. Never get tired of the magnificence of it all.

Just a few weeks ago the river was frozen but now it’s time to get back to boating season. Our friends picked us up in their airboat and gave us a ride back to town to pick up Jeff’s bigger boat. Airboats can get out on the water even before the ice is all gone. They just glide right over it. It was a really nice ride. Just because we’re in town doesn’t mean we stop seeing wildlife. Even in town wild creatures are everywhere. Here’s a spruce hen crossing the road after we got off the boat.

The eagles and the seagulls love hooligan. They spend hours on the beach trying to catch them. You always know the hooligan are in when you see them hanging out on the beach like this.

We netted a bucket of hooligan! It took Jeff a couple of hours to fillet them. Some people like to just gut them and eat them whole but I like to take just the fillets and dip them in flour and then fry them in oil until crispy and brown. They are very rich but delicious.

One of the first signs of Spring is the hooligan running up the river. They are lots of fun to catch.

Lots of trees come down the river each year and pile up on sandbars and islands around the cabin. One of my favorite things to do is go out collecting driftwood and hanging out on the beaches. It’s amazing how big some of the trees are. Cottonwood is Alaska’s biggest tree. You can see in these picture how big they are compared to Jeff and I

Jeff and I have taken a few boat rides. Have to dress warm though. It’s a little chilly on the water. Still ice floating downriver every day – Jeff like to ride the icebergs!

The Spring sunsets have been so pretty. The colors glisten on the water and make the icegergs floating downriver sparkle. I can watch for hours while listening to sounds of the birds and the seagulls flying by. It’s so calming.

I looked outside the cabin window and saw 2 moose. I grabbed my camera thinking how cool and then 2 more moose walked into the picture. How unusual to see 4 moose in the yard at once. A herd of moose! They saw me in the window and when I moved to go to the door to get outside to get a better look they ran for the hills.
