My Alaska Life
When fiddle ferns come out in the Spring they are quite edible. You break off the curly top and fry them up. But they quickly unfurl and then they are no longer edible. They are just a Spring treat.

Here’s a good shot of the newly planted garden. A few starter plants and lots of seeds in the ground. I watered it and then it rained so everything got nice and wet. I’m looking forward to watching it grow.

Jeff made rows in the garden using a string method so the rows would be straight. I went behind him and planted potatoes, cabbage, greens, beans, peas, carrots, radish, onion, herbs, fennel, and kohlrabi in the rows. We’ll see what grows.

The hooligan are are still coming up the river. You can see them swimming in the water so thick that they are coming out of the water running over each other. Jeff and I took 1 dip with the net and got dinner. Jeff filleted them and I cooked them.

This is the view along the highway from Anchorage to the Matanuska Valley. It’s gorgeous! As many times as I’ve driven this road I never get tired of the view.

The woodpeckers are back and they sure are busy pecking on the trees. You can hear them from far away and you can see the the holes where they pecked in the trees. We have a lot of them around the cabin.

The garden was full of snow a few weeks ago but it’s all melted now and the sun dried it out enough for Jeff to till it. All ready for planting now.

The raspberry patch before and after raking and pruning. We’ll have happier raspberry plants now.

We have a large raspberry patch. Each Spring I rake it out and prune all the dead branches off the bushes. It’s a lot of work. I put my rainsuit on not to keep rain off but to keep from getting stuck by thorns and also to keep from getting bitten by mosquitos. I spent about 3 hours a day for 3 days raking and pruning.

Jeff got the 6 wheeler out weeks ago since it has tracks and gets around easier on the snow. However, the 4 wheeler, which I like to drive, has wheels and was buried behind feet of snow in a shed. The snow finally melted and Jeff was able to get it out. Jeff was smart and took the battery out for the winter. He put the battery back in it and it started like a charm. I’m enjoying having it to toodle around on again.
