We continue to ice fish for burbot. When Jeff cleans the burbot he leaves the carcasses on the river by the hole. The eagles have learned this and come and take the leftovers. Easy fishing for them! This eagle was out on a snowy day to score some dinner.

Here’s a pic from a place we call lookout point. From here you’re looking at the frozen Big Susitna River, which we have to cross to get to the spring on the other side of the river. The spring is at the top far left corner of the picture so it’s a ways away. You can see why it won’t be possible to get to our water once the river starts melting. We stock up now and then once the river melts we’ll be able to take a boat over there to stock up on water again. In this picture you can also see that the snow is starting to melt. Most of the winter snow completely covered up the chairs that sit there. Now we can see them again. Probably in the next month we’ll be able to sit at them again.

In some places April is the time to start planting a garden but not here! It’ll be awhile before all this snow melts!

We also collect rainwater in the Spring, Summer and the Fall. If we needed, we could boil it and use it for drinking but mostly we collect it as a back-up to the spring water for things like washing and bathing. Jeff went ahead and put out barrels last week but at night it’s still getting below freezing and the water in the barrels froze. We won’t be able to use it until it gets above freezing long enough to melt the water again.

We have a dry cabin so we have to bring in water for drinking, cooking, cleaning and bathing. The best water around is from a natural spring across the river. Here we are at the spring getting a few buckets full. Most winters we have been able to walk right up to the spring but the snow and ice really piled up around it this year making it very hard to get to, but Jeff has managed to make a path.

View of Sleeping Lady after the latest snowfall. Such an awesome winter scene, but it won’t be long before all this snow will turn to water.

We’ve been checking the burbot lines every day and have gotten 13 so far. This 27 incher was the biggest yet!
