Here is Jeff riding an iceberg before they all melted. It’s a yearly tradition.

Jeff and I took a ride in the boat over to driftwood island where I like to collect wood for making into walking sticks.

Jeff says to me “What is that in the water? Is that 2 eagles riding icebergs down the river?” Sure enough it was. First picture you can hardly see them so I zoomed in. Pretty cool thing to see! Looks like we’re not the only ones that were excited to be able to get on the water again!

After clearing out the ice from the launch area, Jeff was able to get his smaller boat in the water and took it for a ride on the Susitna. It’s boating season again!

We had a huge piece of ice stuck on the bottom of the river right in front of where we put in the boat in. Jeff was going to use his peavy to push it off but it wasn’t long enough so I had this great idea of using a tree Jeff had cut down this winter. I could hardly lift it but Jeff did a great job of using it to shove off the ice.

When the river broke up it left icebergs all over the banks of the river. Have you ever climbed an iceberg? It’s a real Alaskan thing to do!

We’re excited that the river broke up yesterday and excited to get the boat in the water soon. However, even though it got clear for a few hours the ice upriver will keep coming down in waves for the next week or so which makes it hard to ride in the river without hitting ice. Also, we have the problem of getting the boat to the water after icebergs piled up along the bank in front of the cabin during break-up. We’ll see how long it takes for the icebergs to melt enough to get a boat into the water.

The Big Susitna River broke up today. It’s an awesome sight to see. Here’s a couple of pics as it was breaking up taken from Tsat’ukegh, the big rock overlooking the river.
