Jeff got his big boat out for the summer season. It’s so nice to have a top to keep the wind and rain outside of the boat. And it even has a heater which is still coming in handy. It’s been a pretty cool Spring.

It was a late breakup this year and after using the small boat to get around the river near the cabin we got a ride to town the 20th of May in our friend’s airboat. Nice ride to the Landing!

It’s sandhill crane season! These are some big birds!

In addition to potatoes, beans and peas and squash, Jeff and I planted lots of starts and seeds like cabbages, broccoli, kohlrabi, beets, onions, fennel, dill, cilantro, kale, swiss chard, collards, carrots and turnips, corn and sunflowers. Here’s what it looks like now. We’ll see how it turns out this fall.

Jeff and I love growing potatoes. He planted red and white potatoes in a special row he made in the middle of the yard. I planted 7 different kinds of potatoes, 1 whole row of purple potatoes, in 3 rows of the main garden. We should have plenty of potatoes in the Fall, fingers crossed.

After Jeff tilled the garden I helped him make nice straight rows in it using his ingenious string method. Looks pretty good. Ready to plant. Also got a row up for bean and peas with a fence for them to climb up on. Behind the beans and peas you can see my tires where I planted some squash.

Another thing we like to harvest this time of year is fiddlehead ferns. It’s a very short season. You have to get them before they unfurl which happens very quickly. I got a bag full and fried up a few of them and froze the rest for another day.

One of the things we look forward to in the Spring after the river melts is hooligan fishing. They come in quickly and then they are gone. We managed to catch a few as they passed by.

It took awhile before the snow melted out of the garden but it’s finally gone and drying out. Looking forward to getting the garden started.
