My Alaska Life

Jeff and I get our fresh water from a natural Spring across the river that Jeff found coming out of a hill along the shore more than 20 years ago. He developed the spring by putting a pipe in the side of the hill to collect the water. We use the pipe to fill up 5 gallon buckets and haul them back to the cabin by sled behind a snowmachine in the winter and by boat in the Summers. During breakup we can’t get to the spring for about a month because the river is in the in-between stage, too frozen to drive a boat but too thawed to snowmachine on, so we have to stock up on water to get us through the interim. Jeff and I made many trips over there the last few weeks to put gallons of water into big barrels here at the cabin so we will have plenty of water to get us through break up. I like to have plenty of water for drinking, cooking, showering, washing dishes and clothes etc. I try to be thrifty but it’s hard. Here we are filling up buckets at the spring. Look how beautiful and clean the water is.
