My Alaska Life
Even though we’ve had frost and snow already this Fall, the Matanuska Experimental Farms still had potatoes in the ground. Since they were underground and below the frost line they were still okay, although I had to dig through frozen dirt to get to the potatoes. The farm, located in the fertile Matanuska Valley in Palmer, where most of Alaska’s good farmland is located, plants around 70 varieties of potatoes and other crops for experiments. They then give away the crops. I took the grandkids so they could get a chance to dig some potatoes. We got a bag of a variety of interesting potatoes different from what we usually grow. It was a beautiful day out and lots of fun with the kids.
